FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS RECRUITMENT WEEK?
Recruitment week is a time for girls interested in joining SYZ to meet active sisters and learn more about the sorority. This is the time and chance to ask any questions about SYZ , the new member education process, or sorority life as a whole.
During this time, the sisters of SYZ hold a variety of events to provide an overview of our organization and our values, as well as what we do and who we are. This is a time to get to know each sister of Sigma Psi Zeta and for us to get to know YOU!
If you decide to participate, you become a rushee. No commitments or promise are made during recruitment, so relax, and just have a good time during recruitment week!
WHAT SETS SIGMA PSI ZETA APART FROM OTHERS?
As an organization we strive to promote, develop, and stand for strong, independent, and intelligent women. We help all of our members succeed as leaders in their educational and professional careers and support them in any personal endeavors in leadership, sportsmanship and community involvement.
Many sororities are similar, however, the main difference between SYZ and any sorority is the women in the organization and our values. When choosing a sorority to rush, the most important factors should be how comfortable you feel, how well you get along with the sisters, and how you see the sorority fitting in your own life path. When deciding which sorority you wish to join, you should think about if you see us as people you can rely on and can call a sister-- people who will give you our unconditional support. If the answer is YES, you should definitely consider joining! After all, sisterhood lasts beyond recruitment week and even beyond college. It lasts for a lifetime.
DOES SIGMA PSI ZETA HAZE?
Hazing constitutes violence and to do so would directly contradict with our philanthropy, which is to combat violence of all forms against women. The purpose of the new member education process is to help stimulate a bond between the members of the intake class and the sisters that have already been initiated.
We do not mentally, physically, or emotionally degrade our intakes. To do so would work against the ties of loyalty, allegiance, and dedication that we as sisters of SYZ aim to create.
Furthermore, our organization has a zero tolerance no-hazing policy, and we take pride in the fact that no sisterships have been suspended for hazing to this date.
WHAT IS A BID?
A bid is an official invitation to individuals to join our sorority after completing the rush week requirements. You can either accept or decline the bid, if extended to you. If you decide to accept the bid, you will have to go through a new member education process in order to become a full fledged sister.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A BID?
It is important to remember that you are a student and that should be your priority. Please make sure you are enrolled as a full-time student (12+ credit hours) at Syracuse University or SUNY-ESF, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 before, during, and after the process, and be in good standing with the Office of Students Rights and Responsibilities. Unfortunately, those who are already affiliated with another Panhellenic or another multicultural sorority will not be eligible to join.
It is most importantly that you be yourself! Our organization doesn't have a specific mold you must fit. Your individuality simply adds character to our organization! So make sure to come out to our recruitment week! You must attend at least 2 events, 1 general interest meeting (GIM), and complete an interview to be eligible for a bid.
