Childification is a cultural phenomenon that primarily impacts Asian Americans in the United States; Asian Americans' abilities are comparable to those of a child due to a limited understanding of their abilities and leadership capabilities. Combining literature on the model minority stereotype, East versus West parenting styles, and media representations, this thesis will define and explain what childification is and how it negatively impacts Asian Americans' ability to achieve leadership positions contrary to what the myths say. Companies value the hardworking demeanor of Asian Americans, hence the name ‘model minority.' However, due to an implicit conception of naivety because of focusing on book smarts rather than street smarts as a child, and how Asian Americans are portrayed as cute and supporting characters in the media, we find ourselves restricted by a bamboo ceiling. A ceiling that prevents Asian Americans from achieving high-level positions and creating a name for themselves, and effectively diversifying the ranks of those in positions of power.
